Liu Kang: A Centennial Celebration

To commemorate the 100th year of the birth of Liu Kang, a highly regarded and respected Singapore artist, the National Art Gallery, Singapore is organising Liu Kang: A Centennial Celebration. Featuring 100 artworks, sketches, writings and artefacts, the exhibition invites art enthusiasts and visitors alike to explore the life and mind of the prolific artist known for being one of the founders of the Nanyang movement.
The inaugural edition of Art Stage Singapore, Asia’s premier international art fair, came to a close on Sunday, 16th January 2011. The four-day fair and VIP preview saw a total of 32,000 visitors attend the event which showcased quality contemporary artworks from 121 galleries representing 26 countries.
Collectors’ Stage: Asian Contemporary Art from Private Collections

Organised by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) in co-operation with Art Stage Singapore, SAM is pleased to present Collectors’ Stage: Asian Contemporary Art from Private Collections. Featuring 33 artworks by 18 collectors, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity for the public to view artworks by some of Asia’s most famous and critically acclaimed artists that are kept in the personal collections of eminent private collectors. The exhibition is supported by the Economic Development Board of Singapore, Helutrans and Mapletree.
Art Stage Singapore, Asia’s premier international art fair focusing on the Asia Pacific art scene and market, makes its debut today. Featuring over 120 of the most exciting and promising contemporary and modern art galleries from 26 countries, the fair will present a balance of Asia Pacific galleries juxtaposed against carefully selected Western galleries. This first edition of Art Stage Singapore will also see the congregation of the art world at Singapore’s latest iconic destination, Marina Bay Sands.
East Meets West – The Exhibition of Wu Guangzhong’s Paintings

In a show of solidarity with the regional community of Asian art museums, The National Art Gallery, Singapore will be travelling key works to China under its banner for the first time. From 20 November to 25 December 2010, the artworks of recently bereaved master Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong belonging to Singapore will be exhibited at the Zhejiang Art Museum in Hangzhou. Titled East Meets West – The Exhibition of Wu Guangzhong’s Paintings, it comprises a total of 307 works of art by Wu, of which 76 will hail from Singapore’s national collection. Singapore’s contribution of works is the second largest amongst the eight participating art institutions.

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is proud to partner the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) to present Trans-Cool TOKYO, an exhibition that showcases the outstanding collection of contemporary Japanese art from the MOT.
Charting the development of contemporary art in Japan through the years, the exhibition features thought-provoking works by artists who have made an indelible impact in contemporary Japanese art, including major names such as Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara as well as rising stars including Kiichiro Adachi and Haruka Kojin.
Cheong Soo Pieng: Bridging Worlds

Do you know that leading artist Cheong Soo Pieng’s “Drying Salted Fish” painting is featured on the back of Singapore’s Portrait Series $50 note? One of the most prominent names in the Singapore art scene, Cheong Soo Pieng is best known for contributing towards the Nanyang style of art. In Cheong Soo Pieng: Bridging Worlds, visitors can relive the process of art making from Soo Pieng’s eyes for the first time. They can also view contemporary artworks created by upcoming artists Chua Kaifang, Michael Lee, and art collective Vertical Submarine that are inspired by Soo Pieng.
Natee Utarit: After Painting

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is proud to present the first solo exhibition of a Thai artist, Natee Utarit entitled, Natee Utarit: After Painting. This extensive exhibition, which is sponsored by Credit Suisse AG as part of the Bank’s “Innovation in Art” series, is a mid-career survey of one of the leading figures in contemporary Thai painting. It marks Natee Utarit’s biggest solo show to date and his first museum retrospective. It has been made possible through the museum’s close ties with key local and overseas partners in both the public and private spheres.
The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and the Centre Pompidou (CP) from Paris take a step forward this morning in strengthening cultural alliances between Singapore and France in the field of contemporary art. Both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for future cooperation to enhance the development and showcase of contemporary art, building upon a wider government-to-government framework agreement signed by Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the French Republic Bernard Kouchner in January last year.
The curatorial team of Singapore Biennale 2011 (SB2011), the country’s largest international contemporary visual arts exhibition, today announced the first artists to be presented in next year’s event (from 6 March to 8 May 2011).
