On 18 November 1982, educated anarchist and young activist Neil Roberts took a planned, radical and finite step; he attempted to blow up the “Wanganui Computer” at Wairere House on the Whanganui River. A then-powerful symbol of ‘Big Brother’, the computer was the physical manifestation of the New Zealand Government’s first foray into archiving digital data on its citizens.

From September 10, Len Lye will fill New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in the largest exhibition of his work ever presented in New Zealand. The Govett-Brewster has been home to the Len Lye Foundation Collection and Archive for more than 30 years.
Crucial central government support announced today by the Minister for the Arts, Culture and Heritage the Hon. Christopher Finlayson is a critical step towards making the Len Lye Centre a reality.
Lance Girling-Butcher, New Plymouth District Councillor and Len Lye Committee Chairman, says the committee is delighted with the Minister’s announcement that the Len Lye Centre will receive support of $4 million over two years from the Government’s Regional Museums Policy for Capital Construction Costs.
