Irving Penn: Diverse Worlds

For the first time in the Öresund region, a rich selection of Irving Penn’s photographs from some of his most famous serial photography will be presented. His innovative fashion features, portraits and still-lifes made Irving Penn one of the leading photographers of our time. Spanning more than 60 years, his career is characterised by a cool, minimalist approach to the medium. With a selection of nearly 90 works and samples from his assignments for numerous publications, the exhibition at Moderna Museet Malmö covers a broad spectrum of Irving Penn’s oeuvre.
CO Hultén: Anxiety and Craving

CO Hultén is a local pioneer who launched Malmö on the international art scene after the Second World War. This spring, Moderna Museet Malmö is featuring a major solo exhibition of the 95-year-old artist. This is a unique opportunity to study his output over 70 years, and the part he has played in Swedish art history.
Ladies and Gentlemen! The Camera as a Mirror

This spring Moderna Museet Malmö will be showing more than forty photographs from the period 1950-90 taken by leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Samuel Fosso, Tracey Moffatt, and Elina Brotherus. The exhibition focuses on the art of portrait photography and how the artist in his or her studio creates images that depict people not just as they actually are, but also as they would like to appear.
John Peter Nilsson has been appointed director of Moderna Museet Malmö. He currently works as a curator at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and will take up his new position on 1 March, 2012.
Change of Scenes

This autumn, Moderna Museet Malmö opens its largest exhibition since the inauguration in 2009. With more than 100 pieces from the Moderna Museet collection of works from 1900 to 1950, Change of Scenes will fill practically the entire museum. Two obvious highlights are The Dying Dandy by Nils Dardel and Apollo by Henri Matisse – two key works from this exciting, revolutionary and innovative period – which will be shown for the first time in Malmö.
Doris Salcedo: Plegaria Muda

Doris Salcedo is one of the foremost sculptors of our time and Moderna Museet Malmö is proud to present her first solo exhibition in Scandinavia. She exhibits a completely new work, comprising 69 sculptural units. Under the title, Plegaria Muda, these individual units fill up the entire Turbine hall with an, at times elusive, at times penetrating presence.

In the latter half of the 19th century, the rules and norms governing visual arts were dissolved and replaced by a wide array of artistic possibilities, where small constellations of artists fought for new, revolutionary ideas. Partly as a consequence of the emerging art of photography in the second half of the 1800s, the artists of the time eschewed the concept of naturalistic depiction and instead began to explore the conditions of painting. Illusionist painting was no longer a viable alternative.
Marcel Duchamp

Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) emphasised the importance of the concept in a work of art. He was one of the first proponents of open art, where the interpretation of the viewer or posterity contributes to the creative act and thus to the meaning of the work. Moderna Museet has one of the world’s finest collections of Marcel Duchamp’s art, and fourteen of these works are now being shown at Moderna Museet Malmö.
Alice Neel: Painted Truths

This autumn, Moderna Museet Malmö presents Alice Neel: Painted Truths – the largest exhibition of this American artist ever to be shown in Scandinavia. With 59 works spanning more than 70 years, the exhibition fills the entire Turbine Hall and the new gallery at Moderna Museet Malmö.
Yael Bartana: and Europe will be stunned

As our main exhibition this summer, Moderna Museet Malmö is proud to present the internationally acclaimed film artist Yael Bartana. The exhibition and Europe will be stunned will occupy the entire Turbine Hall, screening five of the artist’s most recent film productions, all balancing on a thin line between fact and fiction, history and future, rhetoric and propaganda.
Luc Tuymans: Against the Day

Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) is one of the most respected painters of his generation, and therefore Moderna Museet Malmö is proud to present his exhibition Against the Day at the opening of the museum. The exhibition contains 20 newly produced works.
