For the KUB Billboards Danh Võ selected found images from the history of Vietnam and arranged them in pairs.
On the one hand, there are photos of intimate situations among Vietnamese men taken in the 1960s by Joseph Carrier while working as an economist for the RAND Corporation; on the other, illustrations of martyrs in Vietnam who underwent torture and execution for their faith.

The exhibition, VALIE EXPORT / Archive, provides the opportunity to rediscover new aspects of an internationally renowned artist whose works are counted among the canon of 20th century art history and represented in many important museum collections. In this unusual and surprising presentation at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, in part, works that hitherto have not been exhibited will be on show.
To put forward another sign of solidarity the phrase “Free Ai Weiwei” from today on will be placed on the roof of the Kunsthaus Bregenz in red letters (height 1.90 m).

When Ai Weiwei was invited to mount a big solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus Bregenz one and a half years ago, no one could have foreseen the present situation. At the beginning of April 2011, Ai Weiwei was arrested at the Beijing Capital International Airport. Since then, up to the time of the writing of this text (May 2011), nothing has been heard of him. Neither his family nor his team knows where he is or how he is faring. No official charges have been brought to date.
The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was arrested at Beijing International Airport on April 3, 2011, and has been detained since at an undisclosed location. Neither his family nor his team knows where he is. His arrest, which is part of a wave of repressive measures against critical intellectuals and artists, has been heavily criticized internationally.

For the KUB Arena’s second project in 2011 the architects Yona Friedman (Paris) and Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz who lives in Bregenz are invited to make a joint presentation of their works—two architects who with their visionary ideas in the 1960s not only developed approaches to problems of urban planning, but also created the basis for a new philosophy in architecture.

This ambitious group exhibition investigates how contemporary artists have appropriated existing repertories of visual images and transformed them through specially developed techniques. Earlier examples of this procedure, for instance in the work of John Baldessari, Jean-Luc Godard, Richard Prince, Martha Rosler, and Andy Warhol, form the cornerstones of the show.

The artist Haegue Yang, born in 1971 in Seoul, surprised visitors to the 53rd Venice Biennale at two separate exhibition locations. As part of the largescale thematic group show »Fare Mondi« in the Arsenale she presented seven sculptures from her work Series of Vulnerable Arrangements – Domestics of Community, consisting of metal stands, from which electric cables in differing diameters and colors along with various kinds of objects and light bulbs opulently cascaded. In their vertical orientation these works are as equally reminiscent of life-forms as they are of technological relicts from an era earlier than the 21st Century.

The second project in the KUB Arena’s new program engages with forms of agency and representation within artistic performative practices. Five international artists, Ruth Buchanan, Simon Fujiwara, Suchan Kinoshita, Falke Pisano, and Ian White, have been invited to open up the KUB Arena for process-orientated configurations in which performance is articulated as a practice that is both aesthetic and conceptual. The project seeks to follow a critical as much as formal approach to performance art and its relationship to objectbased exhibitions.

With Harun Farocki, the Kunsthaus Bregenz presents a filmmaker and artist whose work has had a strong influence on the history of the political film since the late 1960s. His great importance to the visual arts is reflected not only in the retrospectives of his films at institutions like Tate Modern in London but also in solo exhibitions at the MUMOK Wien, the Jeu de Paume in Paris, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. At the very least, Farocki’s participation in the “documenta” in 1997 and 2007 is a strong indication of the impact of his films and installations in the art context.
