As a contemporary Texas artist, Altman recalls childhood memories as a significant influence throughout her artwork. Common themes found within her work are separation, loneliness, individuality and loss of identity illustrated through her usage of commonplace objects and materials in unusual ways. The 42 pieces of artwork featured in Tree Line include Altman’s highly-praised torch drawings, tree paintings, packing blankets, snow globes and goldfish bowls. These and other works featured in Tree Line center primarily on mimicry and replication.

From Oct. 16, 2010 to Jan. 9, 2011, visitors to the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) have the good fortune of viewing Sedrick Huckaby: From Earth to Heaven, featuring his “quilt paintings” and portraits of his family created in thick, impasto paint. The most acclaimed piece included in the exhibition will be A Love Supreme, the 80-foot long painting of a series of quilts designed to totally encompass the viewer while representing the artist’s African-American heritage and family.

The Southeast Texas community lost a beloved friend with the death of artist George Wentz in March 2010. Fortunately, his joy lives on through his vibrant artwork collected by many and will be featured in an exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) from July 24 through Sept. 26. An opening reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 23 to remember Wentz. It will include a gallery talk by Andy Coughlan of the artist’s life and work.

Virgil Grotfeldt, 274296

274296 is the final body of work of Grotfeldt, one of Houston’s leading artists, who died from cancer on Feb. 24, 2009. He had been treated for lymphatic illness at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center since 1993, when he was first assigned the patient number 274296. The 18 oil paintings that comprise the exhibit incorporate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of Grotfeldt’s own brain.
