Gagosian to Participate in Art Basel 2023: Works by Richard Avedon and Giuseppe Penone to Be Exhibited in Art Basel Unlimited

Gagosian’s presentation in Art Basel Unlimited features ten exhibition prints from Richard Avedon’s photographic series In the American West (1979–84), and a work from 2006 by Giuseppe Penone.

To produce In the American West, Avedon spent five years traveling through twenty-one western states, photographing more than a thousand people. Using natural light and a white backdrop, he emphasized his sitters’ poses and expressions, picturing ordinary people with striking immediacy. These ten oversize prints were selected by the artist to hang in the windows of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, for the inaugural exhibition of the series in 1985.

Giuseppe Penone
Spine d’acacia—Contatto, aprile 2006 (2006)

Giuseppe Penone’s Spine d’acacia—Contatto, aprile 2006 is a large-scale multi-panel mixed-media painting in which the artist explores the connection between an act and its visual trace. By attaching thousands of thorns to the work’s panels in a swirling pattern, he creates the impression of a pair of lips, expressing a visceral, even sensual relationship with nature.
