Art After Hours , the popular social gathering designed to build community around art will be relocated to the MMA La Mirada galleries at 720 Via Mirada in Monterey for the months of January, February and March. Always held on the third Thursday of the month, Art After Hours this month falls on January 15 and takes place from 5-7pm. Hors d’oeuvres are provided by Quail Lodge with wines courtesy of Blazer Wilkinson. As always, the public is invited to attend Art After Hours free of charge.

At MMA La Mirada, the Angela Strassheim exhibition makes for a provocative setting for conversation. A rising star on the national contemporary art scene. Strassheim’s carefully staged works explore scenes from the life of her family and friends, focusing on the mystery and timelessness of seemingly ordinary events and moments. Formally trained as an artist and a forensic photographer, Strassheim approaches her work with a complex visual aesthetic and a scientific rigor. Her unique vision, culminating in striking works that combine powerful immediate impact and compositional subtlety, has earned Strassheim inclusion in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and a group exhibition at the Walker Art Center. The exhibition presents a selection of thirty works spanning Strassheim’s career.

Art After Hours traditionally takes place in the galleries of MMA at Pacific Street. Those galleries are temporarily closed to the public in preparation for the Monterey Museum of Art 50th anniversary exhibition Made in Monterey, which opens April 18, 2009.
