First Annual Asheville Jewish Film Festival
The Fine Arts Theatre, Center for Jewish Studies at UNC-Asheville and the Asheville Art Museum are pleased to present
The First Annual Asheville Jewish Film Festival at the Fine Arts Theatre Saturday,
March 21 through Thursday, March 26, 2009.
The Asheville Jewish Film Festival promotes the diversity of Jewish identity through film, exploring the dynamic environment of history and culture on the modern Jewish experience to a rich and varied community. Festival activities are meant to create a space for dialogue about what it means to be Jewish, creating awareness and pride in various and differing aspects of identity. The festival strives to link newcomers with the vibrant Jewish community formed over Asheville’s history, bringing attention to a constantly evolving Jewish culture.
The Asheville Art Museum’s film choice is The Old Stores. “We chose The Old Stores as the Museum’s sponsored film because of the artistic sensibility in its cinematography and the way this film preserves the history of the stores despite the fact that they will inevitably die out,” says Nancy Sokolove, Adult Programs Manager at the Asheville Art Museum.
The Old Stores (2006), directed by Yoav Gurfinkel, is the story of a number of old stores in modern-day Jaffa-Tel Aviv — all small businesses, 40-years old or older, who have somehow survived despite the hardships of time. The film passes between the stores and unfolds an old and aging world of tradition and family businesses, a whole fabric of life, and places very different from the fast, dynamic life that surrounds us.
Join us for a screening of this engaging film on Monday, March 23rd at 1:00 p.m. or Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m. at the Fine Arts Theatre.
