remix at Art Gallery of Western Australia
remix
Art Gallery of Western Australia
16 April – 15 August 2011
remix showcases the creativity of some twenty contemporary Western Australian artists of diverse backgrounds, age and experience. The exhibition includes a broad mix of media with painting, sculpture, design, photography and filmic work, most of it recently created by the artists and representing some of the most compelling examples of contemporary practice by Western Australian artists.
remix is the third in the Gallery’s series of local Western Australian artists exhibitions. Like mixtape in 2003 and 2006, remix is non-thematic and cross-generational, while picking up some connections around artists’ creative attitudes and focal points of interest. All three exhibitions represent a selective account of a particular time and place in contemporary Western Australian art, not a broad comprehensive survey.
remix offers just one particular version out of many other possible combinations of current visual practice. Above all, remix aims to delight and engage anyone interested in sampling what is happening now in contemporary art in Western Australia.
The selected artists include Brendan van Hek, Daniel Argyle, Juha Tolonen, Thomas Jeppe, Helen Britton, Clare Peake, Tarryn Gill and Pilar Mata Dupont. A substantial catalogue with commissioned texts will complement the exhibition.
