Between 1910 and 1960, American society underwent tumultuous and far-reaching transformations. The United States emerged as an international power of economic, industrial, and military might, while also experiencing two world wars and the Great Depression.
American Moderns, 1910-1960: From O’Keeffe to Rockwell, on view at the Delaware Art Museum from October 12, 2013 through January 5, 2014, features paintings and sculptures that highlight the changes in American art and culture during this fascinating half-century.
This major traveling exhibition, drawn from the Brooklyn Museum’s renowned American art collection, features works of art produced by leading artists of the day, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman, and Norman Rockwell. Complementing the Delaware Art Museum’s own significant holdings of 20th-century American art and illustration, American Moderns exemplifies the unique contributions to modern culture by visual artists as they looked for new ways to make their work relevant in a changing world.
The range of works in this exhibition provides the opportunity to investigate a wide array of artistic styles, such as Cubism, Synchromism, Precisionism, Expressionism, and Social Realism, along with themes that explore images of modern structures, Americana, and stylized renditions of landscapes and still-life arrangements.
“This exhibition presents a broad and inclusive view of modern art in the United States, expanding the discussion of what is considered modern,” explains Delaware Art Museum’s Heather Campbell Coyle, Curator of American Art. “The paintings and sculptures range in style from meticulously realist to entirely abstract, from romantic to mechanical, from nostalgic to avant-garde.”
Along with the exhibition, the Museum will host a variety of events and programs including an exclusive Members Preview, gallery talks, a symposium in partnership with the University of Delaware’s Friends of Art History, and a free family day.
